Laura Jean Pierce

Laura Jean Pierce, 90, Topeka, passed away June 18, 2013 at Stormont-Vail Hospital surrounded by her entire family.

Jean was born August 14, 1922 in Topeka to Frederick J. and Mildred (Steinkamp) Steinmeyer. She attended Topeka Lutheran School and graduated from Topeka High School in 1940. She graduated from the Jane C. Stormont School of Nursing in 1943 and shortly thereafter joined the US Army Nurses Corps. She served in England during World War II tending to the sick and wounded. After returning from the war, Jean took a post-graduate course of study in surgical nursing at the University of Virginia. It was here that she met her future husband, Donald Pierce, a medical student. They were married on September 6, 1947 in Charlottesville, VA. After Don completed his medical residency in Milwaukee, WI, they moved to Topeka where Don set up his family medical practice.

She was a past president of the State Medical Alliance from 1971-1972 and past president of the Shawnee County Medical Alliance. She was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was active in many church organizations. She was involved with her "Sewing Club" for over 60 years and also volunteered with local Boys and Girls Scouts clubs. Jean loved gardening, spending time in her greenhouse, attending KU football and basketball games, and going to her grandchildren's various activities.

Jean is survived by two sons, Mark (Linda) Pierce and Tim (Pam) Pierce of Berryton, KS; two daughters, Sheri (Gary) Williams and Laurie (Bruce) Andrews of Topeka; eleven grandchildren: Danny, Kristen, Jeff, Katie, Erin, Abby, Lindsey, Cassie, Scott, Jennifer, Kelsey and eleven great-grandchildren: Justin, Caden, Chase, Parker, Collin, Taegan, Kennedy, Ryder, Jackson, Amelia and Kallie. She is also survived by a sister, Marge Hale of Eudora and a sister-in-law, Jean Mavis of Oregon, WI and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Donald Pierce, an infant son, Donald Pierce, Jr., and two sisters, Ruth Thurman and Lucille Casebier.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 901 SW Fillmore, Topeka, Kansas 66606. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Pierce will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th, Topeka, Kansas 66604, where the family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church.
