Larry Glen Waters died on February 3, 2018 at Midland Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family, following a valiant 25+ year battle with Parkinson's. He was born in Topeka, KS on January 29, 1935. He was the son of Helen (Harmon) and Lee Waters. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1953, where he lettered in Wrestling, Track, and Cheerleading. He graduated from Washburn University in 1959 with a degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and participated in Track and Cheerleading. He served in the US Army and Army Reserve.
Larry married his college sweetheart, Barbara J. Ronsick, in Topeka on December 21, 1958. She survives. Together they founded Watsco, Inc. in 1970 and they established 31 plants in nine countries. He previously was national sales manager of Seymour Foods, salesman for Harding Glass, and owned the Beauty Pleat drapery company. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he served as Chairman of the Stewardship Committee, Chairman of the New Organ Committee, and as Deacon. Larry served the Topeka Lutheran School as Chairman of the Board of Education and Chairman of the School Foundation. He was a long time member of the YMCA, where he played handball for 40 years, into his 70's. Mr. Waters was active in hunting, fishing, scuba diving, and belonged to the Red Dog Dive Club, British Car Club and enjoyed weekly afternoon pitch game with friends.
Along with Barbara, Larry is also survived by a son, Christopher D. Waters (Jennifer), Topeka, a daughter, Shari L. Waters (Nanette Hinchey), Kearney, Mo; daughter-in-law, Melissa G. Waters, Denver, CO; and five grandchildren, Elizabeth A. Logan (Nicholas), Caroline K. Waters, C. Benjamin Waters, Rachel E. Tolbert, and Rebecca K. Tolbert. He is also survived by two sisters, Judy K. Flint and Charlene K. Miller, both of Topeka. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Lee Waters, and a son Chad Matthew Waters.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
