Larry O. Jackson, 72, passed away Friday, August 14, 2015, at Aldersgate Village, after a yearlong battle with cancer.
Larry was born May 1, 1943, in El Dorado, KS, to Ernest and Florence (Smith) Jackson. He was raised by his mother and step-father, Charles Thornton, in Augusta, KS. He graduated from Augusta High School. Larry played high school football and basketball and then went on to play football at Butler County Community College. Larry joined the Air Force on the same day President Kennedy was shot, Nov 22, 1963. He was stationed at Forbes Field, Topeka. He met his wife of 49 years, Linda Kay (Heryford) Jackson, while in Topeka. They were married August 6, 1966. After the Air Force, Larry went to work for Goodyear Tire and Rubber, where he retired after 37 years. Larry was a lifelong KU fan.
He is survived by his loving wife; sister-in-law, Dana (Steve) Hammontree; two nieces, Katlyn (Scott) Lowe and Jamie (John) Childers; and great twin nieces, Roxanne and Layla Lowe.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents and step-father.
A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2015, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Foundation, American Cancer Society, and the Helping Hands Humane Society, Topeka.
