Larry Douglas Mahan, 60, died at home, Sunday, April 27th following a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born Sept. 16, 1947 in Springfield, MO and graduated from Drury College in 1976 with degrees in Criminal Justice and Sociology. He served as a Combat Engineer with the 173rd and 101st Airborne Special Forces, including two tours in Vietnam. He retired from active military duty in 1974 with the rank of Captin and was the recipient of seven Purple Hearts and The Bronze Star.
Larry moved to Topeka in 1985 and was employed as an electrician at the Goodyear Plant from 1985-2004 where he also served as a volunteer plant Fire Captain and plant EMT. He owned and operated, with son Errin, Mahan Electric from 1988-2002.
Larry is survived by his wife, Nancy, of the home; sisters Linda Johnson, Springfield, MO; Sandy Krueger, Brinham, TX; and brother Dennis Mahan, Springfield, MO; son Errin Mahan, Topeka; daughter Wendy Dixon, Kilgore, TX; two grandsons and a great-granddaughter; step-daughters Laura Morris, Peculiar, MO; Anne Zorn, Peoria, AZ; Jennifer Ross, Topeka; and step-son Russell Emerick, who is currently serving in Iraq; and four step-grandchildren.
Family visitation will be held at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel on Sunday, May 4th from 6-8 pm. Graveside services will be at the Prairie Home Cemetery, NW 35th and Menoken Road at 1 pm on Monday, May 5th.
