Kenneth E. "Ken" Strobel Kenneth E. "Ken" Strobel, 88, Topeka, passed away Friday, September 21, 2018 after a 20 year battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was born September 17, 1930, in Canova, South Dakota, the son of Elmer and Stella (Bakke) Strobel. He graduated from Canova High School and earned his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from South Dakota State. Ken served in the Air Force and was stationed in Iceland.
Ken began his career with the Kansas Turnpike Authority and later became a partner in Cook Flatt & Strobel Engineers, designing many bridges in the surrounding area.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and later Faith Lutheran Church.
Ken married his high school sweetheart, Marlys Schulz on November 22, 1951 in Canova, South Dakota. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Resa (Glen) Lemesany; daughter-in-law, Karen Strobel; four grandchildren, Carly Hill, Ansley Strobel, Collin Strobel and Christian Lemesany; three great-grandchildren, Blaise, Amy and Layla and many in-laws and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Scott Strobel and infant brother, Sydney Strobel.
Ken, Marlys, Scott and Resa enjoyed life, living in the Potwin Community. Ken was an avid KU fan and always enjoyed telling a good joke!
A celebration of Ken's life will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue. A visitation and reception will follow until 7:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at a later date in South Dakota.
