Kenneth Roland Moran passed away December 29, 2014, at the age of 93. He was born January 13, 1921, the oldest son of Maurice and Esther (Logan) Moran, at their farm southeast of Dover, Kansas.
Kenneth attended Highland Grade School and graduated from Dover High School. He attended Stricklers Business College and was later employed by Kansas Selective Service. Kenneth enlisted in the U.S. Navy as Yeoman, Third Class Petty Officer on September 22, 1942, taking boot training at Great Lakes, before being transferred to Sampson Naval Training Station in charge of recruit personnel records. On May 14, 1945, he was transferred to Treasure Island, California, then to Toloso, P.I. He served aboard the USS Gilliam, APA 57 prior to it being sunk in the first atomic bomb test at Bikini Island. He was discharged at Norman, Oklahoma, on April 14, 1946, as Chief Petty Officer. Kenneth was employed by Coolidge Implement Co. in Council Grove, Kansas, for over 11 years before returning to Topeka in 1957. He was employed by Capital Super Service and then the State of Kansas SRS for 28 years, before his retirement on September 1, 1985. In 1959, he began Income Tax and Bookkeeping Service in his home office until the present.
Kenneth met his wife to be, Naomi Litke, in Council Grove, Kansas, and they were married September 29, 1946, at her parent's farm.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi; sons, Richard (wife Kathlyn) of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Ronald of Cascade, Montana, and Kenyon (wife Carolyn) of Circleville, Kansas; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Francis Moran of Topeka; and sisters, Zelda Wright and Eva Riley of Dover. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kyle Moran.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66604. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Moran will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home, where the family will receive guests from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
