Kenneth "Reed" Mitchell, 82, of Topeka, passed away June 27th, 2012, in Topeka, Kansas after a lengthy and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born November 16, 1929 in Hollywood, California, the son of John Holly Mitchell and Anna Pauline (Becker) Mitchell.
Ken graduated from Parker High School in Parker, Kansas in 1947. After high school he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 – 1951. His 36 year career with Southwestern Bell began shortly after high school in 1947 and included management positions in Manhattan, Kansas City, Abilene and St. Louis, ultimately ending in Topeka, Kansas, retiring in 1983.
Ken was known for his fearless, endless remodeling projects. He was an avid, competitive runner, along with his wife, Vernita, in his 30's – 50's. He consistently and humbly endowed his children and grandchildren with the creative products from his woodworking shop.
Ken is survived by his wife of 61 years, Vernita (Kim) Mitchell; daughters, Marilyn Manwaring (John), Myrna Mitchell (Wayne Olson), Marla Mitchell (Jim Baker); son, Dan Mitchell (Lori); 11 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 2, 2012 at St. Johns Lutheran Church. Luncheon and fellowship will immediately follow the service and burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Ken will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
