Kenneth P. "Kenny" Mumford, 74, passed away Sunday, January 17, 2016, at his home in Topeka.
Kenny was born January 19, 1941, in Denver, CO, to Robert and Bessie (Hoover) Mumford. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1959. He served 4 years in the US Navy.
He worked as a Trooper for the Kansas Highway Patrol and was a pilot flying both enforcement aircraft and the Executive aircraft. He served 6 governors while assigned to the Protective Service Detail. He retired in 1995 with the rank of Captain after 31 years of service. After retirement, he worked for the Capitol Police for 12 years.
Classic cars were Kenny's hobby. He built many over the years. He loved going to car shows and cruise nights.
Kenny married Sondra Moss on May 20, 1962. They later divorced. He married Pat Bardsley on September 18, 2010 and they later divorced, but remained close friends. Survivors include children, Teri (Stan) Schmidt, Todd Mumford, Kammie (John) Campagna; 6 grandchildren: Craig Schmidt, Casey Schmidt, Collin Schmidt, Nastassja Mumford, Lauren Campagna, Joe Campagna; 1 great-grandchild Jaerson Mumford; sister, Mary Brooks; and brother, Larry Mumford; many nieces and nephews; a dear friend of many years, Jack Benge; and four legged companion Annie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Bud Brooks; and sisters-in-law, Janice and Marilyn Mumford.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2016, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS 66604. Inurnment will follow at Topeka Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
