Kenneth Johnson

Ken E. Johnson, 79, Topeka, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at Midland Hospice House. He was born May 16, 1926 in Circleville, Kansas, the son of Marlin Glenn and Mabel Irene Wilkerson Johnson.

He attended elementary and high school in Circleville, and Kansas State University in Manhattan. He served in the Army during World War II.

Ken owned and operated a grocery and locker plant in Circleville, and a clothing store in Onaga for 10 years.

He served as Public Relations Director for the Kansas Corporation Commission, served as Administrative Assistant to Gov. John Anderson, and then was Kansas Assistant to Senator James Pearson. He was appointed Executive Vice President to the Kansas LP-Gas Association in 1967 and served until retirement in 1986.

He was past District Governor of Lions International, and past President of the Topeka Public Relations Society.

He was a member of the Arab Shrine of Topeka and was an active member and past commander of the Legion of Honor, and was named Arab Temple Noble of the Year in 1994. He was also a member of Circleville Lodge # 20, the Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies, the Order of the Eastern Star, St. David's Episcopal Church and the Kansas State Alumni Association.

He married Beth Ellen Deardorff on June 20, 1948 in Circleville, KS. She preceded him in death on June 23, 1982. He married Gloria Christie on November 26, 1983 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on June 18, 1999.

Survivors include a son, Tom Johnson and his wife, Penny of Topeka, his companion, Gloria A. May of Topeka; three sisters, Virginia Geis, Circleville, KS, Nolah McCahon, Hillsborough, CA. and Pauline Jensen, Holton, KS and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Johnson will lie in state after 1:00 pm, Friday July 15 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 pm that evening. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Saturday July 16 at St. Davids Episcopal Church with burial to follow in Circlevile Cemetery in Circleville, KS.
