Keith Krause

Keith Shaner Krause, 85, Topeka, died Thursday, September 12, 2002, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Krause was a captain with the U.S. Public Health Service before he retired. He began his career in 1940 with the Iowa State Department of Health. He was a commissioned officer in a sanitary engineering capacity with the federal water Pollution Program in 1948 and later served as a staff member with the Task Force on Water Pollution in the 1950's

He was regional director for the Water Pollution Control Program in Dallas from 1955 to 1959 and the U.S. representative and chairman of the advisory board on Water Pollution Control to the International Commission, United Sates and Canada.

Mr. Krause initiated the first comprehensive study of water pollution in the Great Lakes as well as in numerous river basins in the U.S. He directed new systems analysis techniques and computer simulation of the hydrology and biochemical reactions in bodies of water. He retired as assistant commissioner of the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration in 1966 to became executive director and chief engineer of the Kansas Water Resources Board where he remained until retiring in 1976. He served as a first lieutenant during World War II in Africa and Italy.

He was born February 5, 1917, at Allen, Nebraska the son of John and Ina Krause. He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Iowa State University in 1940. He earned a master's degree in public health and engineering from the University of Michigan in 1953.

Mr. Krause participated in the Kansas Ecology Council and the state Mined Land Reclamation Board. he also served as secretary and chairman of the Kansas Academy of Science. He received the Meritorious Service Medal of the USPHS, the Department of the Army certificate of appreciation for Patriotic service and the Second Hoover Commission Special Citation for Notable Contributions.

Mr. Krause was a member of First Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Phyllis Buche Krause; a son, John Krause, Bethesda, Maryland; two daughter, Pamela Letelier, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Janet Neff, Berryton; and six grandchildren.

Services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday at First Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Relatives and friends will meet from 10:30 a.m. to service time Monday at the church.
