Kay Adamson

June 23, 1947 — June 21, 2014

Kay Julie (Hunter) Adamson, 66, died at home in Topeka, Kansas of small-cell lung cancer on Saturday, June 21, 2014.

She was born in Denver, Colorado on June 23, 1947, a daughter of Doris Marie (Sholander) and John Sheldon Hunter. Within months after her birth, her family moved back to Topeka, Kansas, where she spent the rest of her life. Kay was a granddaughter of Florence (Johnson) and Canon C. Sholander, and she was also a granddaughter of Julia Venita (Underwood) and John Addison Hunter. Her father unexpectedly died when she was twelve-years-old.

Kay married Bob Adamson in the chapel of lst Presbyterian Church in Topeka, Kansas on May 29, 1970. They were married for forty-four years and had three children: Aimee Adamson, Robert Wayne "Robbie" Adamson, and Russell D. H. Adamson.

She attended Sumner Elementary, Gage Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High, Topeka High, Washburn University, and the University of Copenhagen. She worked in hematology under Dr. Rene LeFebvre, Dr. Wike "W.W." Scammon, Paula Bliss, and many other fine people in the lab at Stormont-Vail Hospital for many years. Later she helped Dr. Neil Schimke of the K.U. Med Center conduct outreach clinics in genetic counseling in Topeka. During this time, she also worked under Dr. David Gray.

She is survived by her husband, her daughter, her son Russell, her twin sister Mrs. Karen Reedy, her brother Wayne Hunter, and several cousins and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Robbie, her parents, and her grandparents.

Kay often needed more help than the rest of us, especially during her last few years, but that's the way life sorts itself. It always has. Then people like Chris Barney of St. Francis Mission Woods Clinic as well as the entire staff of the St. Francis Cancer Center to include, among others, Karen Olson, Dia, Brook, Beth Brown, Audra, and Kelly would go beyond themselves with that extra special touch of warmth and humanity. These are the things that matter; bank accounts, talent, achievement, and social status begin to fall aside in favor of simply extending your hand.

Kay was not a simple person, and she kept things simple. She especially loved medicine, animals, and cooking. She asked for very little; she had no thoughts of traveling abroad or buying a large house or driving a new car. She treasured happy memories of her childhood in Topeka, her family, and her friends. She was always eager to like someone. To all who knew her, she leaves behind the eternal sound of her voice and the ever present picture of her face in our mind's eye. She was a kind, decent person, and she was loved. That's as high as anyone can go in this life, and she was able to achieve perfection right alongside the rest of us. These things are very easy to know when it's time to say goodbye.

She is gone, and she is with us.

Burial is beside her son Robbie and other family members in Lincoln Garden section of Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka, Kansas.

Memorials may be made to Helping Hands Humane Shelter of Topeka, 5720 SW 21st Topeka, Kansas 66604-3720.
