Katie Hanson

Katie Louise Hanson born in Spearville, KS on May 12, 1915 to Lealia and Elmer Young who both preceded her in death. She died in Topeka, KS on 1/05/04. She lived practically all of her life in Kansas and in Topeka for the last 55 years. She graduated from high school in Emporia and attended the Teachers College of Emporia for two years prior to marrying Floyd Hanson in 1935. They had no children and he preceded her in death in 1981. Late in life she went back to college and received her degree from Washburn University. She also took graduate work at Emporia State. She then taught in Head Start for several years and was a strong advocate of the program. Before her failing health in recent years, she was active in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Women's Club, Topeka Civic Theater and various bridge clubs. She loved to travel and enjoyed playing in bridge tournaments in Topeka and other cities. She was an accomplished musician in her younger years and played the saxophone in an all girls dance band that traveled around the country in the early 30's. She was a very caring and thoughtful person and will be missed by her many friends. She is survived by her brother and his wife Gene and Sharon Young of Oklahoma City, two nephews, Chris and Mark Devine of Oklahoma City an aunt Orpha Stinson of Buffalo, OK and a number of cousins and friends. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the Doctors, Nurses and staff at Stormont Vail Critical Care Unit, Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital, and Select Specialty Hospital for their gracious care and comfort for the last three months. Also a special thanks to all of Katie's neighbors and friends who looked after her for the last few years. We can never thank there enough.
Services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday 11/08104 at Westminster Presbyterian
