Kathryn Alice (Newman) Georgia was born on November 20, 1933 in Topeka Kansas. She was the youngest of five children born to Hazel and Arthur Newman. She graduated from Topeka High School and attended Washburn University. She married Alvin James Georgia on July 20, 1952.
Kathryn was a life-long member of St. John A.M.E. Church where she served as Secretary of the Trustee Board for many years. She was also a member of the Usher Board, Stewardess Board and various choirs.
She was Past Grand Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Past Illustrious Commandress of the Daughter of ISIS and Past Loyal Lady Ruler of the Golden Circle.
She is survived by three daughters; Jocelyn M. Thompson and husband Alexander of Yorba Linda, CA, Roxanne K. Irvin of Fullerton, CA, Carolyn L. Georgia of Lake Elsinore, CA, one son, Alvin J. Georgia Jr. of Tustin CA, a son-in-law, LeRoy Irvin Jr. of Anaheim, CA, seven grandchildren; Angela Thompson, LeRoy Irvin III, Janelle Williams and husband Terrance, Charles Irvin, Charles Thompson and wife Linda, Sarah Irvin and Brittany Moore, eight great-grandchildren, one sister, Mary Blackwell of Topeka, KS (husband Irvin, deceased), two brothers, Stewart Newman of Marblehead, MA (wife Dorothy, deceased) and George Newman of Abilene, TX and wife Dorothy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin J. Georgia Sr., one son, Galen A. Georgia and one sister, Ann Elizabeth Newman.
Kathryn was employed by the State Health Department following graduation from High School and later went to work for the Topeka State Hospital where she retired.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at St. John A.M.E. Church. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Kathryn will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Eastern Star services will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Monday during the visitation.
