Katherine N. Smith, 85, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015.
She was born April 13, 1930, in Waterville, Kansas, the daughter of Frederick and Nellie (Rommel) Honstead. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1948 and Kansas State University in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in education.
Katherine taught art at Marysville High School from 1953-1960. In 1967, she began working at Washburn University's Mabee Library, retiring in 1995.
Mrs. Smith was an active member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years.
Katherine married Donald P. Smith on June 2, 1957, at First Lutheran Church, Topeka. He preceded her in death on October 24, 2014. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, William Honstead, Marjorie Feldhausen, Herndon Honstead and John Honstead.
Survivors include her son, Craig W. Smith, Prairie Village, Kan.; numerous nieces and nephews and cherished neighbors and church friends.
Katherine enjoyed reading, puzzles and following K-State sports. She never met a stranger and enjoyed sharing her light-hearted humor with everyone she met.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Monday, May 11, 2015, at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
She will lie in state on Saturday until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church.
