OBITUARY



Welch, Karen Peterson



Karen Welch died on Saturday, January 17, 2009. Karen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was gracious and caring, always thinking of and doing for others even when faced with declining health.



She was born July 27, 1936 in Newton, KS. She was the eldest of the three children of Bernard and Faye Peterson. She graduated from Newton High School in 1954 and Kansas State University in 1958 majoring in music. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority.



She married Thomas Earl Welch in 1960 and moved to Topeka, KS, to start a family and support his dental practice.



Her faith was a very important part of her life, and she loved her church, Grace Episcopal Cathedral, where she served on the Vestry as Junior Warden, Altar Guild, and Daughters of the King.. She was the first Executive Director of the Topeka Community Foundation and was instrumental in its growth. She was a member of and held several offices in the Junior League of Topeka and was a recipient of the Gold Rose. She served on the Boards of the Topeka Performing Arts Center, Historic Topeka, the Stormont Vail Foundation, and Mulvane Arts Center, where she was also a past chairman of the Mulvane Art Fair. She was a member and officer of Chapter EP of PEO, a member and officer of Stormont Vail Health Center Hospital Auxiliary Group VIII, a member of Western Sorosis, and a supporter of the Topeka Symphony.



Welch is survived by her loving husband, Tom; her son and daughter in-law Andrew and Ellen Welch of Dallas and their children Thomas and Sarah Kate; son and daughter in-law David and Betsy Welch of Atlanta and their children Charlie and Ella; her daughter Betsy of Kansas City; her brother Pete and his wife Rita of Salina; and nieces Leslie Reardon, Sarah Guinn and Amy Berckman and nephew Stewart Adams.



A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at 1:30 pm in the Great Hall of Grace Episcopal Cathedral followed by a Requiem Eucharist at 3:00 p.m. 701 SW 8th St., Topeka, KS.
