Karen Elizabeth Sibley, 70, Topeka, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Midland Care.
She was born November 29, 1946 in Bryan, Ohio, the daughter of Edgar Fisher Rhoades and Dorothy (Waldy) Stafford. She grew up in Topeka, Kansas and graduated from Topeka West High School in 1964.
Following her education she went on to work for the State of Kansas as a Legal Assistant with the Board of Tax Appeals.
She was referred to as "Crazy Aunt Karen" by her friends and family. If she was driving a short distance in a wintry storm, she could not see the need in cleaning her windshield, but would drive down the street with her head hanging out the window. In the hospital she was teasing the cute guys, holding hands with the doctors, and making us all laugh even though she was battling her own illness.
Karen was an avid reader, loved watching old movies, and listening to Frank Sinatra sing. She loved her doggies and spoiled them with special food, toys and love.
She was a loveable, but zany mother, sister, and aunt who never ceased to amaze and amuse her family with her witty words and sense of humor. She delighted in hearing about family happenings, funny incidents and special moments that centered around her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Rice (Mark) of Topeka; a sister, Mary Dalton (Steve) of Topeka; a brother, Daryl Rhoades (Jan) of Topeka; nieces, Maegan Leavendusky (Toby) of Mayetta; Stephanie Rhoades of Kansas City; Ashley Rhoades of Kansas City; and nephew Chris Rhoades of Topeka.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66606. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
The family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff in the ICU at Stormont Vail and at Midland Hospice House for their loving care, compassion and for the special attention that was given to Karen.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Karen's honor to Helping Hands Humane Society or Midland Care.
