Kara Nicole Bayless

Kara Nicole Bayless, a brilliant PhD student at Indiana University in Bloomington, died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 16, 2010. A recent knee surgery may have lead to the pulmonary embolism which ended far too early a successful and happy life full of study, travel, fun, and lots of love. She was 28.

Kara was born in Ponca City, OK, on March 8, 1982, later moving to Lake Jackson, TX, where she graduated from Brazoswood High School in 2000. At Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, she earned her Bachelors Degree with honors in Russian Studies and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa society. Kara spent the next year living in Novgorod, Russia, where she taught English to middle- and high-school students. At Indiana University she completed work for both a Master of Library Science and Master of Arts in Folklore and Ethnomusicology and was continuing in the University's prestigious PhD program. A research expedition to Russia in 2008 took her across the continent on the Trans-Siberian Railway. In Siberia, Kara collected texts and recordings of folk songs and documented embroidery patterns of traditional costumes, also collecting oral histories of the women singers of Batama. Her dedication to the art of teaching and her students at Indiana earned her the prestigious Henry Glassie Teaching Award. She was a member of both the Slavic and East European Folklore Association and the American Folklore Society.

Kara will continue to be loved, missed, and remembered by her parents Dolan and Kathy, of Crestwood, MO; her brother Brant; her brother Cory, along with his wife Jamie and nephews Jordan and Toby; her Grandparents Lee D. and Francis Kirwan, her extended family in Topeka, KS, and her boyfriend Jason Pierson of Bloomington, IN, who all feel the void left by her terribly early departure.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka, KS. Kara will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 S.W. 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604.
