Julia Faye Dryden, 97, Topeka, died Sunday, July 27, 2003 at Aldersgate Village. She had been ill for several years.
She was born Jan. 28, 1906 in Carbondale, the daughter of Joshua Brown and Lizzie Luthey Hewitt. She graduated from Carbondale High School in 1918 and attended the College of Emporia, Emporia State Teachers College, and the University of Kansas. She was an avid sports, scholarship, and endowment supporter of the University of Kansas throughout her life. She married Gerald Olin Dryden on Oct. 15, 1927 in Topeka. He died March 17, 1987. They were both members of the KU Alumni Association.
Mrs. Dryden served as scholarship chairperson for the Topeka Chapter of the Kansas Engineering Society Auxiliary for 20 years. She also served as a counselor for a group in the Business Girls League at the YWCA for many years, was a member of the board of the Florence Crittenton Home, served on the Topeka Girl Scout Council, and taught kindergarten Sunday School for over 40 years. She directed choirs at her church, Job's Daughters, and the Girl Scouts. She served as a consultant for volunteers in the corrections program for the Shawnee County Court. For a number of years, she was employed as an admittance interviewer for state mental hospitalization for the Shawnee County Probate Court. She had previously been employed by the Santa Fe Railway and was a member of the Santa Fe Old Timers Club.
She was a life member of Topeka Chapter #462, O.E.S., the Ancient Toltec Rite, Arab Shrine Auxiliary, Kansas Engineering Society Auxiliary, and First Congregational Church.
She was preceded in death by a foster daughter, Virginia Hewitt Rice on Dec. 25, 1984 and by two sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Dryden-Damron of Mesa, AZ and Topeka; 2 Grandchildren, Stephen C. Damron and Julie Damron-Dittmer; 2 Great-grandchildren, Stephen C. Damron II and Brian Alan Damron; 3 Great-great-grandchildren, Mitchell Damron, Abigail Damron, and William Damron.
Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, August 9 in Keys Hall at First Congregational Church. Private inurnment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
