Honorable Robert J. Lewis, Jr., 64, passed away on May 3, 2004 in Topeka, he was born in Atwood, KS, on July 28, 1939. He was graduated from Atwood Community High School in 1957. In 1961, he earned a BA degree from the University of Kansas in history and political science. He was graduated from the University Of Kansas School Of Law with highest distinction in 1963. After graduation from law school, he served 2 years as assistant attorney general for the State of Kansas. In 1965, he returned to Atwood to enter into private practice with his father in the firm of Lewis, Lewis & Beims. During his law practice, he served as Rawlins County Attorney from 1967 to 1971. Bob practiced law with the firm until his appointment to the Court of Appeals in January 1989. He was awarded a Master of Laws in the Judicial Process degree from the University of Virginia in May 1998. His thesis, entitled The Kansas Sentencing Guidelines Act, is published in the Washburn Law Journal, Volume 38, No. 2.

Since 1993, Judge Lewis has served as the designee of the Chief Justice on the Kansas Sentencing Commission and on the Kansas Board of Law Examiners since 1997. In 1991, he received the Award for Courageous Advocacy from the American College of Trial Lawyers for his representation of a criminal defendant while in the practice of law. He was one of only seven attorneys to ever receive this prestigious award.

Judge Lewis was a member of the Order of the Coif, Kansas Bar Association and the Judicial Administration Division of the American Bar Association. He was also a member of the KU Alumni Association, UVA Alumni Association, Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, Topeka Downtown Rotary Club, a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, the Jayhawker Club, Topeka Inns of Court, Topeka Friends of the Zoo and the KU Williams Fund.

Bob was preceded in death by his father, Robert J. Lewis, Sr. on June 4, 1999 and his daughter Lisa Lewis on Sept. 28, 2001.

On September 2, 1961 in Atwood he married Jane Sramek, she survives him. Other survivors include his mother, Marvel Lewis, his sister M. Jane Lewis, son Robert Jeffrey Lewis, III and his daughter-in-law Vittoria Anne Pontieri-Lewis, daughter Kathryn Anne Welch and son-in-law William Charles Welch. Judge Lewis leaves five loving grandchildren, Robert Jeffrey Lewis, IV, Abigail Jayne Welch, Samantha Lisa Lewis, Olivia Kathryn Welch and Delaney Jane Taylor.

The Lewis family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 beginning at 5:30 p.m., in Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Eulogies from several friends will begin at 7:00 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Thursday, May 6, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be a private family graveside in Atwood, at the Atwood Fairview Cemetery.
