Joyce Lee (Ginder) Markham, 74, of Topeka, passed away Friday, March 3, 2023.
She was born July 16, 1948, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Jack and Mabel (Sayler) Ginder. She graduated from Seaman High School in 1966 and attended a summer Spanish program at Ibero Universidad in Mexico City, Mexico in 1969. She graduated from Washburn University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, having double majored in Social Work and Sociology. In 1981, she earned her Master of Science in Education from Kearney State College in Kearney, Nebraska and later in 1996 earned her second master degree, Master of Social Work from the University of Kansas.
Joyce began her career in October of 1981at South Central Community Mental Health Center as an Alcoholism Counselor in Kearney, Nebraska. In June 1987, the family moved back to Topeka where she worked briefly as a Primary Adolescent Counselor at Memorial Hospital. Later that year, she joined St. Francis Hospital Chemical Dependency Unit as a family therapist until 2001. Establishing her private practice in 2001, with a focus on children and families, addiction and recovery as well as individua therapy. Throughout her career she provided the care to countless clients, utilizing the motto, "Helping Others, Help Themselves".
As the first in the state of Kansas to be certified as a Certified Compulsive Gambling Counselor (CCGC) she was dedicated to the treatment, recovery and awareness of this issue. She was a co-founder to the Kansas Coalition on Problem Gambling (KCPG) and currently serving as the President. She also held several memberships and earned numerous licenses and certifications throughout her career including: Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker (LSCSW), Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), Certified Compulsive Gambling Counselor (CCGC), National Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC), Specialist Clinical Social Worker (LSCSW), Kansas Certified Gambling Counselor Outpatient Counseling Treatment, Outpatient Diagnostic & Referral and Support Services (KCGC); National Council on Problem Gambling II (NCGC-II), International Certified Gambling Counselor (ICGC-II), Licensed Certified Addiction Counselor (LCAC), and Masters of Social Work (MSW).
In addition to her active career, Joyce was a member at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, where she helped in teaching Sunday School. She also assisted with Sunday School at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Kearney, Nebraska.
Her family meant everything to her and one of her greatest joys was being a grandma. She loved shopping, mostly for shoes and purses, as well as flower gardening and sewing blankets. She also enjoyed crafts from jewelry making to painting, and always had her home decorated for each holiday.
On July 18, 1970, she married Ronald Reese in Topeka, they later divorced in 1987. On May 21, 1988, she married Gaylon Markham in Topeka, he survives. Other survivors include sisters, Ronda Nelson and Debbie (Craig) Hoffman; daughters, Rebecca Reese and Jolee Spencer; sons, Heath Markham and Craig Markham, all of Topeka; 10 grandchildren, Shelbi (Eric) Self, Skyler (Alex) Markham, Brett Richardson, Lauren Richardson, Ty Richardson, London Richardson, Hunter Spencer, Kael Markham, Kamren Markham, and Sadee Markham; two great-grandchildren and one on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded death by her parents, Jack and Mabel Ginder.
Visitation will be 6-8pm Thursday, March 9, 2023 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th, Topeka. Funeral services will be 10am Friday, March 10, 2023 at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 SW 8th Avenue, Topeka. Private family entombment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. To celebrate Joyce's life and love of color, we invite you to wear colorful clothing to the services.
