Joyce Gray, 80, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Midland Hospice with her family at her side.
She was born February 5, 1937 in Temple, Texas, the daughter of the late Joseph Henry and Floy Faye Tharp Cook.
She graduated from Temple High School in May, 1955 and became a U.S. Air Force wife, moving to duty stations in Oklahoma, Japan, Illinois, California and Topeka where her husband Jim retired from military life and they decided to make Topeka their home. She worked for Canteen Food and Vending as an accounting clerk for many years and retired from American Home Life Insurance Company in 1997 as Senior Clerk in Commission Accounting. While working at American Home she joined the National Association of Insurance Women local chapter, the Insurance Women of Topeka and through that organization earned the designation of CPIW (Certified Professional Insurance Woman), served on the Board of Directors as Secretary and several years as Treasurer. She was also Treasurer for the Regional Convention hosted by Insurance Women of Topeka. She also attended several national conventions.
Joyce's hobbies included her computers, Bible study, genealogy, playing and calling bingo, playing poker, canasta and traveling to see her family. She shared an interest with her husband in old cars and country music. They were avid square dancers with the Strato Jets Square Dance Club for 22 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Topeka and the Faithbuilders Sunday School Class.
Joyce married James Edward Gray on September 11, 1955 in Victoria, Texas. He preceded her in death on February 4, 2017.
Survivors include three children, Gerald Lee Gray (Laura) of Tremont, IL, Cynthia Jean Evenson (Robert) of Emporia, KS and Scott Alan Gray (Donna) of Roy, UT; five grandchildren, Kelly Evenson Rogge (Jeremy), Patrick Evenson, Brett Gray, Andrew Gray (Ashleigh) and Craig Gray; two great grandchildren, Lauren Rogge and Oliver Gray; two sisters, Carol Ann Brown of Ft. Worth, TX and Dorothy Janelle Proctor of Galveston, TX; many nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and her beloved dog, Magic.
A funeral service will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, February 25, 2017 at First Baptist Church, 3033 SW. MacVicar, Topeka KS 66611 with burial to follow in the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW. 6th Ave., Topeka, KS 66606.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, 3033 SW. MacVicar, Topeka, KS 66611 or to Midland Care, 200 SW. Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
