Joyce Yvonne Dryden- Damron, 86, died on September 26, 2023 in Topeka, Kansas. She divided her time between Topeka, KS and Mesa, AZ since 1997. She was an elementary school educator for 40 years including service in the Council Grove, KS, Rossville, KS and USD #437 Auburn- Washburn School Systems. Following her 1996 retirement as a kindergarten teacher at Jay Shideler Elementary, she served as a substitute teacher for several years. She was an active volunteer at the in-patient Odyssey Hospice House in Mesa, AZ. She was born January 16, 1937 in Topeka, KS, the daughter of Gerald Olin and Julia Faye (Hewitt) Dryden.
She graduated from Topeka High School, attended the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, and earned a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Education degrees at Washburn University in Topeka where she was a Stouffer scholar. She was active in the Topeka High School Class of 1954 reunions and served as class treasurer.
Mrs. Dryden-Damron was a member of the Order of Eastern Star- Topeka Chapter #462, life member of the Topeka High School Historical Society, the National Education Association, the Kansas NEA, Auburn- Washburn USD 437 NEA, VFW Auxiliary #1650, Washburn University Alumni Association and the University of Kansas Alumni Association and Endowment Association. She was listed in Who's Who of American Educators. She was a member of First Congregational Church of Topeka and Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa, AZ.
She married William J. Damron, January 3, 1959 in Council Grove, KS. He preceded her in death July 19, 2000 in Mesa, AZ. Survivors include a son, Stephen C. Damron (Nancy) of Maple Hill, KS; a daughter, Julie Damron-Dittmer (Phillip) of Topeka, KS and her beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Honoring her wishes, her body has been donated to the Kansas University Willed Body Donation program. A private service will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66604 or to the Velda Rose United Methodist Church, 5540 E, Main Street, Mesa, AZ 85205.
