Joseph J. Zimmer, 88, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 at his home surrounded by his entire family. He was born September 7, 1925 in Neoga, Illinois, the son of Byron and Estella Latch Zimmer.
Joe was an Army veteran of WWII where he served in the 40th Division, 108 Regiment, Company L in the Philippines. He was wounded in combat and returned to Topeka for recuperation. He was employed by the City of Topeka as a Police Officer for 36 years before retiring as Assistant Police Chief. Joe later owned and operated The Kansan: Old Book & Relics. He was a member of First Congregational Church and the Philip Billard Post No. 1650, V.F.W.
Joe married Helen M. Mauer on September 20, 1945 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Sharon M. (Bill) Read of Topeka, one son, Lloyd B. Zimmer and fiancé, Jackie Borgeson of Topeka, one grandson, Christopher (Dawn) Frost and one granddaughter, Erin (Micah) Forstein, three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Kaila and Estella and one sister, Lu Fosbender of Nashville, TN.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church. Private inurnment will take place in Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606 or to the Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka, KS 66608. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting the family.
