Joseph H. "Joe" Lumpkin, Jr., 78, Topeka, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Stormont-Vail Health Center.
Joe was born October 6, 1936 in Tupelo, MS, the son of Joseph H. Sr., and Susy (Wilson) Lumpkin. He graduated from Central High School in Memphis, TN; and received his BS and MBA degrees from the University of Arizona.
He was employed with Palmer News, Inc. from 1959 to 1997, retiring as President. He also served as President of M-S News, Wichita; Co-Owner of Palmer Companies and Co-Owner of 18 Town Crier Retail Stores.
He served as President and on the Board of Directors for both the Central States Periodical Distributing Association and Mid-American Periodical Distributing Association; and served on the Board of Directors of Bank IV of Topeka. He also served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Topeka YMCA.
He was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church, the Topeka Country Club and the Old Farts Club.
He enjoyed golf, tennis, and traveling with his late son, Hank Lumpkin, to countries such as Thailand, Nepal, Mexico and Ecuador.
Joe married Penny Palmer on November 26, 1960. Survivors include his wife of 54 years; daughter, Kelley Kathleen Lumpkin; grandchildren, Madison Collins Goodwin, Grayson Palmer Goodwin and Hartley Wells Goodwin, all of Topeka; and nieces, Patricia Knox and Jennifer Metcalf. He was preceded in death by son, William Henry "Hank" Lumpkin; and sister, Susan Lumpkin Burdick.
Joe will always be remembered as a nice guy, and lover of Suzy's Lemon Icebox Pie.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at St. David's Episcopal Church. Private family entombment will be in Mount Hope Mausoleum.
