John M. Thorp, 88, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2021.
He was born March 1, 1933, in Fall City, Nebraska, the son of Charles R. and Mabel I. (Shaffer) Thorp. He attended high school at Topeka High School. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force in 1953.
John was employed by the Gregg Tire for 38 years as a service manager and worked part time after retirement.
He had a passion for playing the guitar. John was the lead guitarist in the band the Moonlighters. He enjoyed having jam sessions. Also in his spare time, he enjoyed wood working, walking the Shunga trail, traveling to Colorado and Texas to visit friends, and photographing old barns, scenery, and cityscapes.
John married Marion L. Thorp on October 12, 2000 in Topeka, Kansas. She preceded him in death on June 30, 2014. Survivors include a daughter, Jodie Thorp; niece, Kathy (Danny) Kaesewurm; nephew, Mike Thorp; grandson, Keith F. Kulper, Jr.; great granddaughters, McKenzie Kulper and Ashton Kulper. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Lisa Thorp; wife, Carol A. Thorp; grandson, Kevin Kulper; siblings, Eleanor Burns and Earl Thorp.
Honoring John's wishes cremation will take place. A memorial ceremony will be held at 1:00 pm., Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at Mount Hope Cemetery & Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th St., Topeka, Kansas 66604. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS, 66606.
