John Robert Duckworth

John Robert Duckworth, 96, Topeka, passed away on Friday, May 25, 2012 at Golden Living Center in Edwardsville, Kansas. He was born on August 1, 1915 in Gillam, Missouri to John Abram and Mary Elizabeth (Stroud) Duckworth.

As a child, John attended a one room school house in Missouri. He was a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran that served during WWII. On February 10, 1940 he married Grace Lucile Burchett in Marshall, Missouri. They enjoyed 61 years together before she preceded him in death on April 28, 2001. John was a carpenter and draftsman for Highland Mill Shop. He was a member of Carpenter's Union and the Kiwanis Club.

Mr. Duckworth is survived by his daughter, Judy (Steven) Rice of Overland Park; son, Robert Charles (Janet) Duckworth of Omaha, NE; sister, Pansy Christine Shorkey of Marine City, MI; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, three brothers, Harmon, Howard and Claude Duckworth, two sisters, Hazel Sturdivent and Berniece Duckworth, and two grandsons, Brad and Christopher Duckworth.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 30 from 1:00 pm until funeral services at 2:00 pm at the Mount Hope Mausoleum Chapel, 4700 SW 17th St, Topeka. Burial will follow with military honors in the Mount Hope Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
