John Norman Haugsness, 82, Topeka, formerly of Chanute and Seneca, passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Midland Hospice. He was born on March 21, 1931 in Hebron, Nebraska to S.J. and Lillian (Weber) Haugsness.
John graduated from St. Peter and Paul High School in 1949. John was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He then attended Neosho County Community College. He was an electronic communications specialist for the Kansas Department of Transportation and Kansas Highway Patrol where he retired after 39 years and 8 months of service.
He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chanute, V.F.W., American Legion and Kansas Chapter Associated Police Communication Officers, where he served as a past president.
On June 14, 1952, he married Mary Ann Kussman in Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey. She survives. Other survivors include their son, Craig (Diane Leupold); siblings, William, Atchison, KS; Richard, Seneca, KS; Lawrence, Las Vegas, NV; Elizabeth, Topeka, KS; Milton, Buhler, KS; Margaret, Lincoln, NE and Karen, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah, Adrian, Seana, Monica and Sonya and great grandchildren, Zoey, Cadee, Lilly, Cannon and Brady.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Sean and Jeffry and siblings, Robert, Gerald, Kathleen and Jeanette.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 am on Friday, May 3 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. A rosary will be prayed at 6 pm on Thursday with visitation to follow from 6:30 until 7:30 pm at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.
