John Meister

John Conrad Meister, 91, Topeka, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006 at Midland Hospice House following a brief illness.

He was born March 2, 1915 in Longton, KS, the son of Frank Conrad and Amanda Jane McCorkle Meister, and has lived in Topeka most of his life. He served in the US Army during WW2 and was in the Battle of the Bulge.

John retired from the US Postal Service after 35 years as a letter carrier. He then served as Kansas Legislative Postmaster for 12 years. He was a long time member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he served as deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of Topeka Lodge #17 AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Arab Shrine, where he served on the Director's Staff, Hi-Twelve, Kansas Grand Chapter O.E.S. and Past Patron of Beulah Chapter #34. He served as treasurer of West Topeka Kiwanis Club for 18 years and was also a member and secretary of the Golden K Kiwanis Club. He served on the Ward Meade advisory board and also served as tour director. He was a member of NARFE and was a life member of Philip Billard Post #1650 V.F.W. He served as a 4-H leader, and a troop leader for Boy Scout Troop #7 in the 1950's, and as a volunteer for Cub Scouts at Capper Foundation for Crippled Children.

He enjoyed the outdoors, was an animal lover and nature conservationist. He enjoyed fishing, hiking, hunting, tent camping and always took the side roads. He was an avid bridge player.

He married Ann Elizabeth "Betty" Meek on Nov. 4, 1934. They were married for 30 years before they were divorced. They owned and operated Meister's Square Dance Barn during the 1950's.

He married Donna Jean Coffee Welch on Aug. 22, 1968 at First Christian Church in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Judy Ann Fritz, PhD, Emporia, Nancy Ellis, Overland Park, Dorothy Mezger and husband, Fred, Topeka; two step-children, Mark Welch and wife, Jennifer, Olathe and Toni Bixel and husband, John, Scranton; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

John will lie in state after noon today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.
