John Joseph Weinkauf, Jr., 84, of Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Plaza West Regional Health Center. He was born on April 12, 1926 in Topeka, to John, Sr. and Marie (Kerle) Weinkauf.
John graduated from Topeka High School in 1944. He was on the Topeka Police Department for 34 years where he retired in 1984 with the rank of Major. On November 1, 1962 he married Marian L. Carpenter in Lawrence. John was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he served as chairman on the board of elders and was congregation president for two years. He was a former president of Fraternal Order of Police. John also enjoyed bowling and was an avid golfer.
John is survived by his son, John Joseph Weinkauf, III and wife Amanda of Topeka; three siblings, Anna Hill, Robert (Alice) Weinkauf, and Gary (Irene) Weinkauf all of Topeka; two grandchildren, Brittany (Jason) Payne of Texas and Joshua Weinkauf of Topeka; and one great granddaughter Kaylee Payne of Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife Marian on May 5, 2010 and two sisters Adelaide Greer and LaVerna Lane.
Funeral services will be at 11 am on Friday, February 18, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Thursday, February 17 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 901 SW Fillmore, Topeka, KS 66606.
