John J. Studebaker, 84, of Topeka, passed away Friday, January 29, 2010.
John Jay Studebaker was born May 13, 1925, at Pawhuska, Oklahoma to James and Pearl L. (Shipman) Studebaker. He moved to Kansas with his parents at an early age and attended grade schools at Big Springs, Stull, and Topeka schools, the last being Topeka High School. He enlisted in the Army at the age of 18 and was in WWII, stationed in the South Pacific in New Guinea and the Philippines in the 240th Army Engineers, where he saw 19 months of combat. He was discharged from the Army in 1946.
He married Laura M. Donaldson on August 26, 1950 in Topeka. He was a member of the American Legion Post #400, Topeka Moose Lodge #555, Masonic Golden Rule Lodge #90, and was an avid bowler, fisherman, and hunter. John attended Heritage Park Wesleyan Church.
John worked for Henry Manufacturing Co.; his father's boat business, Vio-Holda Manufacturing Co.; and Topeka 501 Schools, where he was a custodian for 23 years at Highland Park North Elementary, Hudson, and Stout Elementary Schools, retiring in May 1987.
John is survived by his wife Laura; one son, George R. Studebaker, Norman, OK; seven grandchildren, Gary, Gregory, Christopher, Ashley, Heather, Phillip and Andrea; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Paul J. Studebaker (April 1960) and a sister, Maxine L. Geist (January 1999).
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW Tenth Avenue, Topeka, KS 66604. Burial will be at the Clinton Cemetery, rural Lawrence, KS. John will lie in state after 1:00 p.m Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heritage Park Wesleyan Church, 2121 SW Harrison Street, Topeka, KS 66611.
