John Edward Huffman, 84, of Topeka, passed away June 12, 2017.
He was born in Topeka, Kansas on August 8, 1932 to John Golden and Margaret Juanita (McCoy) Huffman. John was a 1950 graduate of Topeka High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from the University of Kansas in 1959. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Iceland.
John was employed by the Kansas Department of Transportation, later for the Asphalt Institute in Olympia, Washington, Riffe Petroleum Company in Tulsa, OK and U.S. Oil and Refinery in Tacoma, Washington. He would continue employment serving as Vice-President of Engineering for Brown and Brown Construction in Salina, Kansas, retiring in 2003. During his career he traveled extensively, including several Middle Eastern countries. In 2004 he received the Richard E. Lowell President's Award from the Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association. After his retirement he was a consultant with Terex Inc. in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Salina, Kansas.
John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Marie (Covert) Huffman. They were married August 16, 1958 at Topeka First United Methodist Church. Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Kathy (Jim) Maag of Topeka and Nancy (Rod) Harner of Lincoln, NE; and many nieces and nephews, who always marveled at his ability to deliver the perfect pun at the appropriate time.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Nancy Huffman Franzke; and brother-in-law, John Franzke.
John was an accomplished photographer. He was also an avid KU fan and cherished the times he served as an usher at KU Football games.
Honoring his wishes, John was cremated. A celebration of life service will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Mount Hope Cemetery & Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel in Topeka is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Salina Community Theater, 303 E Iron Ave, Salina, KS 67401.
