John C. Flory passed from this earth to his heavenly home on June 24, 2024, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas.
He had a series of unexpected events happen beginning on May 28, that eventually took his life.
John was born October 1, 1937, to James Eldon and Grace Adele (Barncord) Flory. He was the youngest of 6 children, and is the last survivor. All 6 children were born in the family home in Oakland.
John went to school in the Oakland area, State Street Elementary Holliday Jr. High and graduated from Topeka High School.
He worked at Garlinghouse for a few years before getting hired as a clerk at the ATSF General Office Building, where he worked for 42years.
He served in the Army Reserves from March 1959 to January 1965.
On October 2, 1959, he was united in marriage to Mary Jean Simmons at Topeka Bible Church, where he was a member. God gifted them with two sons.
John had a love for automobiles and it became a family hobby for all his adult life. He was a charter member of Topeka Region AACA and received a 50 year pin several years ago. He was also a member of Golden Spokes car club and Contemporary Historical Vehicle Association. He restored several vehicles in his earlier years.
For several years, he enjoyed camping with his family members.
Beginning in 1987, John and Mary Jean enjoyed many National car club tours with CHVA. They made a lot of wonderful friends over the years, and saw much of this beautiful USA touring in their old cars with these friends.
Just last year they toured around Lake Michigan and drove home from Holland Michigan in one day.
John lived a good life and now joins his parents and five siblings, known affectionately as the “Dirty Half Dozen” in their heavenly home.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jean of the home; sons John Calvin (Kelly) Flory Jr. of Lenexa and Kevin L (Pam) Flory of Topeka; three granddaughters Catherine, Emily and Madison; one grandson, Brogan Buckhalter and one great-granddaughter, Amber Raine, all of Topeka and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Penwell-Gabel from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.
Funeral Service will also be held at Penwell-Gabel at 11:00am on Friday, July 5, 2024.
His final resting place will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.
The family would like to give a special thank you to those people who helped care for John in the nearing of the end of his life. The Doctors at KU, Nurses, Occupational Therapists (especially Marcus and Cody), Hospice workers and everyone who showed kindness and compassion.
