John Wade Coates, 79, Topeka, passed away Sunday, September 28, 2014.
He was born February 8, 1935, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Clarence and Doris (Brown) Coates.
John graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1954 and received a Bachelor's Degree in business from Will Roger's College. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.
John was an accountant with Phillips Petroleum Company retiring after 27 years.
Mr. Coates was a member of the South Knollwood Baptist Church. From 1970 until 1992 he was a member of Baptist Temple in Bartlesville, Oklahoma where he served as bus driver, Sunday school teacher and janitor.
John married Carol Lee Borchert on April 20, 1957 in Kansas City, Missouri. She survives. Other survivors include their children, Carla (Frank) Thomas and Randall (Joy) Coates; sister, Janice Monroe, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Jordan and Elise Singleton.
Funeral services will be 12:30 pm, Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at South Knollwood Baptist Church. Burial will be at 2:30 pm in the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 30 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the church.
