John N. Carr

John N. Carr, age 98, of Lecompton, passed away on November 4, 2023, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital surrounded by family. John was born in Osawatomie, Kansas September 6, 1925. His parents were Kenneth and Anna (Donohue) Carr. He graduated from Osawatomie High School class of 1943 and soon after joined the military, the U.S. Army.

He hit the beach at Okinawa in April, 1945 and served in the ten week battle there as a Surgical Technician in the 82nd Field Hospital, attached to the 96th U.S. Army Infantry Division. After Okinawa, he was sent to the Philippines and served in mop-up operations on the island of Mindoro, then to Korea serving with Occupation Forces. While serving in the Army in Okinawa, he was the chaplain's assistant and played the organ for Sunday services.

Returning after the war, he attended Washburn University where he met the love of his life, Darlene Meyer, and they were married at St. John's Lutheran Church in Topeka on April 14, 1951. Their three children were named Brian, Brenda and Bradley. He attended St. John's Lutheran Church. John loved and spent lots of time reading the accounts of the Okinawa battle and of the Korean War and time spent in Korea one long cold winter in 1946. He also loved music of all kinds and playing the piano.

He was employed in car sales for many years, and also worked many years for the State of Kansas Dept. of Revenue before retiring in 1992.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene, his three children Brian, Brenda and Bradley (Martha), and granddaughter, Claire.

Services will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, November 10, 2023 at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home in Topeka. Burial will be at Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 901 SW Fillmore, Topeka, KS 66606.
