John James, 73, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Stormont Vail Regional Health Center. He was born March 18, 1935, in Inez, Kentucky, the son of Allen and Wilda (Horn) James. John moved to Ohio with his family when he was nine years old. He graduated from Risingsun High School in 1954, where he earned varsity letters in basketball, football, and baseball. After high school, John entered the apprenticeship in building trades.
On April 11, 1956, John married his high school sweetheart, Leone M. Hovis. She survives.
In 1958, John moved his family to Kansas, where he accepted a position at DuPont. He worked for 27 years for DuPont, 10 years with Flexel, where he retired as a maintenance supervisor in 1995.
John was raised to Master Mason in 1978, at the Lecompton Lodge #420, where he later served as Master and Secretary. He served as District Deputy Grand Master, District #14 in 1993. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #393 Meriden, Cabiri #44, and Mayetta Lodge #393. John joined Scottish Rite in Topeka and then became a Shriner at the Arab Temple in 1978. He had also been a member of the Provost Guard, Arab Scooter Patrol, Camel Herders, Royal Order of Jesters, and was a participant in the Gold Medallion Club. John served as Potentate of the Arab Temple in 2004.
John is survived by his son, Russell (Janet) of Ozawkie, Kansas; and a daughter Betty (Mark) Senn of Emporia, Kansas. He was the proud grandpa to Benjamin (Jamie) James of Valley Falls, Mitchell (Natalie) James of Waco, Texas, and Danielle Senn of Emporia; and great grandpa to Camryn, Kyla, and Wyatt James.
Mr. James will lie in state after 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2009, where the family will receive friends between 6 and 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, March 16, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.
