John Arlon Myers, Sr., 73, of Topeka, passed away at home Thursday, May 8, 2014.
John was born July 8, 1940, in Horton, Kansas, the son of Lowell and Irene (Howard) Myers. He was a 1958 graduate of Hiawatha High School and received B.S. (Mathematics) and M.S. (Counseling Psychology) degrees in Education from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS.
John served 16 years on the faculty and staff of the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
John later served for 26 years in a variety of economic development and organization management positions for government and private non-profit organizations in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. He served as the Economic Development Specialist for the City of Topeka.
John served on a variety of state and national professional organization committees and boards of directors and served as a speaker, consultant, and retreat facilitator for more than 120 community organizations, non-profit groups and private sector foundations in 15 states across the country. He also served on the board of more than 20 local non-profit organizations through the years.
Most recently John was self-employed, offering consulting services which included demographic, econometric and economic development research. His largest client was the Kansas East Conference of the United Methodist Church.
John was a member of the First United Methodist Church, of Topeka.
John married Sally A. Moffitt on June 12, 1966 in Oskaloosa, KS. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a son, John A. Myers, Jr., Austin, TX; a daughter, Kristina E. Kaiser and her husband, Davin, Olathe, KS and their sons, Keegan Arlon and Brodie Owen.
John was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Dixie.
John enjoyed spending time with his grandsons, the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Native American Culture, religious studies, science and mathematics.
A celebration of life ceremony will be at 2:30 p.m., Monday, May 12, 2014 at the Klasse Chapel at the First United Methodist Church, 600 SW Topeka Blvd, Topeka, KS 66603. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N. Kansas Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family.
