John A. Carlson, 90, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Midland Hospice House.
John was born April 30, 1925, a few miles northeast of Vliets, the son of Ebben and Lillie (Winquist) Carlson. He graduated from Vermillion High School in 1942.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served during World War II. He was recalled to active duty in 1950 near the beginning of the Korean War and served duty with an amphibious unit.
He was employed by the E.I. DuPont Company at the Tecumseh cellophane plant as a maintenance mechanic.
He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #1 and a life member of VFW Post 1650, all of Topeka.
John married Dorothy Koelsch on December 26, 1952. His wife of 63 years survives. Other survivors include daughter, Connie (Jim) Tilton, Topeka; sons, John J. (Donna) Carlson, Topeka; Steve (Donna) Carlson, Lawrence; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Dayton (Carla) Carlson, Hill City, SD. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sue Nelson; and sister, Norma Stroud.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Hope Lutheran Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Lutheran Church or the Disabled American Veterans.
