Johanna Ruth Grau was born March 18, 1923, at Topeka to Johann Traugott and Dorothea Theresa Anschutz Schulz. Ruth passed away September 18, 2014, at The House at Midland Care, Topeka, at the age of 91.
Ruth was baptized April 9, 1923, at home in Topeka by the pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church and confirmed March 21, 1937, at St. John's Lutheran Church. She attended Topeka Lutheran School, Roosevelt Junior High School, and graduated from Topeka High School in 1941.
Ruth was united in marriage to Adelbert Henry Grau of rural Phillipsburg on September 19, 1943, at St. John's Lutheran Church. She met Del when he was attending an electronics school in Topeka. After their marriage Ruth and Del farmed near Phillipsburg returning to Topeka in 1952. Ruth worked for many years in postpartum and the nursery at Stormont-Vail as a nurse aide retiring in 1983. Del passed away January 23, 2006, after 62 years of marriage.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, St. John's Women's League, and St. John's Lutheran World Relief Sewing Group.
She is survived by her four children: Karen (Robert) Wagstaff of Topeka, Steven (Evelyn) Grau of Dallas, Texas, Linda Currie of Topeka, and Michael (Denise) Grau of Topeka; six grandchildren: Sean (Amy) Slattery, Katherine (David) Meis, Johanna (David) Kubalak, Jonathan Currie, John Grau, and Morgan Brown; 12 great-grandchildren: Finn and Anna Slattery; Benjamin, Amelia, Jackson, Eleanor, Elizabeth, and Caleb Meis; Chloe, Owen, and Nora Kubalak; and Jordan Brown. She is also survived by two sisters: Katherine Deterding of Kansas City, Missouri and Margaret (Robert) Kellerman of Topeka; sister-in-law: Wilma (the late Harold) Beckman of Phillipsburg; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by son-in-law, Roger Anthony Slattery; great-grandsons: Matthew and William Meis; sister: Evelyn Gehrt; and brothers-in-law: Andrew Gehrt, Wallace Deterding and Wilmer Wachs.
Mrs. Grau will lie in state Monday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel and the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Tuesday, September 23, 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church with Rev. Peter Lange officiating. Interment will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, to await the resurrection.
