Joel T. Nelson, 45, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2017 at his home.
He was born September 1, 1971 in London, England, the son of N.B. "Ben" and Sherrae Nelson.
Known by "JT" to his family and friends, he graduated from Shawnee Heights High School and worked at Topeka Metro, giving 17 years to transporting individuals in the community.
JT served with the United States Army National Guard from 2008 to 2014 with the 137th. He deployed in November 2010 until October 2011 with the 778th to Airfjan, Kuwait, conducting convoy missions to Iraq. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW and was an avid motorcycle rider.
JT leaves behind his wife Crystal Nelson; his children Lee Nelson and wife Angel of Shanghai, China, Nicholas Nelson of Dunedin, FL; Zachary, Madison, Seth, Ashleigh and Liam, all of Topeka; his parents, Ben and Sherrae of Dunedin, FL; a brother, Geoff and wife Melody of Topeka and uncle Garry and wife Pam of Land 'O Lakes, FL as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members.
A Celebration of Life will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 1 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 S.W. 10th Ave., Topeka where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A family and friends get together will begin at 5:30m p.m. at Shelter House # 2, Lake Shawnee.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Advanced Individual Services, LLC, 2713 S.W. 29th St., Topeka, KS 66611.
