Joanne Stephens Vail Hempel, 91, of Topeka, passed away Wed. Sept. 23, 2009, at Topeka Presbyterian Manor. She was born Nov. 30, 1917, in Topeka, KS, the daughter of Frank T. Stephens and Hazel Willbourn Stephens.
She was a 1936 graduate of Topeka High School.
Joanne married James C. Vail, Capt. U.S. Marines (WWII) on Dec. 25, 1941. He preceded her in death on Jan. 20, 1960.
She married Sidney S. Hempel on Feb. 25, 1962. He passed away on Feb. 5, 1990.
She lived 25 years in Houston, TX, returning to Topeka in 1968.
She is survived by her brother, Frank T. Stephens, Capt. U.S. Navy (retired) of Canyon Lake, TX; three nieces, Dr. Kay Stephens-Nevill, Cassie Christiansen and Sue Mullen all of Texas; 2 cousins, Russell J. Willbourn and Colleen Winner of Topeka.
Private burial of cremains will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
