Joan Ortega, 81, Topeka, died, Thursday, January 22, 2004 at a Topeka hospital.
Parents: Jose and Inez (Alfaro) Gonzalez (deceased)
Born: Sept. 30, 1922
Place: Nortonville, KS
Attended : St Joseph's Catholic School in Nortonville and High School at Osage City High
Joan was employed as a Nurse's Aide at St. Francis Hospital from 1948-1955, Stormont Vail Hospital from 1955 as a Nurse's Aide until 1959 when the hospital chose a group of senior aides to train as Surgical Technicians. She was employed at this position until her retirement in 1983.
Preceded in death by her son Andrew J. Ortega, sister Sofia Gonzales, brothers Edward Gonzales, Phillip Gonzales, John Gonzales, Joe T. Gonzales, Manuel Gonzales. She has numerous Nephews, Nieces, Grand Nephews and Grand Nieces. She is survived by three brothers: Anthony Gonzales, Vincent Gonzales, and Julius Gonzales. All of Topeka, KS
Mrs. Ortega will be cremated. A memorial mass will be held 10:00am Monday, January 26, 2004 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Ortega will lie in state after 12:00 noon Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30pm and the family will greet friends until 8:00pm Sunday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.penwellgabel.com.
