Joan Helm

Joan M. Helm, 64, of Topeka, died Tuesday, July 12 at a Topeka hospital.

She was born October 6, 1940 in Topeka, the daughter of Edward and Thelma Steinmeyer Helm.

She graduated from Topeka High School in 1959. She then attended and graduated from Washburn University with a bachelor's degree. She was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha social sorority. She worked for many years for the Kansas Inspection Board as an administrative assistant, retiring early to care for her parents. She was a longtime member of Central Congregational Church, where she served as chair of the Mission Board, president of the Women's Fellowship committee, church choir, and Group XI. She received the George and Margaret Epps Award for outstanding community service. She was a faithful volunteer for Doorstep, Inc., Let's Help, Mother to Mother, and supported the Central Congregational Church Computer Center. She helped make quilts and lap robes which were donated to local care homes. She worked in the Dove Tail Thrift Shop and served meals at Let's Help. She was also an avid supporter of the church's Farmer's Market project by providing baked goods and volunteering her time in the booth.

She is survived by her many loving friends.

Ms. helm will lie in state after 1:00 pm, Sunday July 17 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, Monday July 18 at Central Congregational Church, Huntoon and Buchanan, with burial to follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.
