She was a charter member of the Collective Art Gallery in Topeka. In addition to the volume of art, Joan amassed a library of books relating to a wide variety of intellectual interests, including eastern religions, art, architecture, and fiction.
Joan married Dale Briman in Topeka, Kansas on January 24, 1953. They shared 55 years of marriage until Dale's passing in 2008. Joan is survived by sons, Steve (Derie) Briman and Rob (Carol) Briman, four grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
