Jessie Metzger

Jessie Louise Metzger, 77, of Topeka passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Mrs. Metzger was born April 16, 1929 in Wray, Colorado, the daughter of Jesse and Florence Beverlin. She married Delbert Metzger August 19, 1949 in the Navy Chapel at Mare Island, California.. As a Navy wife from 1949 to 1969, Mrs. Metzger lived in many places, including Adak, Alaska; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Silver Spring, Maryland; and Napa, California. She was one of the first Naval dependents allowed to go to Japan during the Korean War. In 1969, Mrs. Metzger's husband retired, and the family moved to Topeka.
Mrs. Metzger loved to laugh and enjoyed people. They enjoyed being around her—she made them smile. She was very generous and never knew a stranger. She enjoyed poetry, her daily soaps, and the Colorado mountains.
Mrs. Metzger was a member of Crestview United Methodist Church, the Topeks Camping Club, the Swinging Squares, and the Topeka Parkinson's Support Group. When Delbert developed Parkinson's, she was faithfully by his side caring for him until his passing in February 2002.
Mrs. Metzger is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Metzger and Denise McCarter of Lee's Summit, Missouri; a son-in-law, Scott McCarter; six grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Wilma Fader of Topeka; and niece, Lisa Flick of Broomfield, Colorado; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grandnephews. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel on Saturday, May 20, 2006. Memorial contributions may be made to the John Knox Village Hospice, 400 NW Murray Road, Lee's Summit, Missouri 64081. Mrs. Metzger will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
