Jessie Lucille Ramey

Jessie L. Ramey, 87, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Stormont Vail Hospital. She was born April 7, 1923 in Neodesha, the daughter of William and Ona (Kirk) Chapman. She lived in southeast Kansas until 1945 when she moved to Topeka. She worked for Helen's Catering Service and M. Katch & Co. For the past seven years, she served as a Foster Grandparent at KNI. Jessie was a former member of Swinging Squares Square Dance Club, the National Campers and Hikers Association, the Kansas Campers Association and the Wagoneers, a local camping club.

She never knew a stranger and always had a smile and a hug for everyone and was loved by all. She was selfless and worked to fulfill the needs of others, especially her grandchildren to whom she could never say "no". Heaven has truly received an "angel".

Jessie married Robert Randolph Ramey on June 14, 1941 at Fredonia. He preceded her in death on December 23, 1993. She was also preceded in death by four brothers. Survivors include one son, Robert L. Ramey and one daughter, Carolyn (Ken) O'Brien, both of Topeka, ten grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in Topeka Cemetery. Jessie will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association, 5375 S.W. 7th St., Topeka, KS 66606 or to the American Diabetes Association, 837 S.
