Jesse F. Teel, Jr.

Jesse F. Teel Jr., was born December 7, 1919 at Dunlap, Kansas to Jesse F. Teel, Sr. and Nellie Long Teel. He passed away Monday, August 24, 2009 at a Topeka hospital.

He was educated in Kansas elementary and secondary schools and received the AB degree from Ottawa University in 1941; a Masters from Emporia State University in 1951; and an EDS from Emporia State in 1965. He did additional graduate work at Denver University.

Mr. Teel taught business education in the Topeka school system for 26 years. At the time of retirement in 1980, he was an educational specialist for business education. Prior to teaching in Topeka, he taught at Fairview, Barnes and Wetmore, Kansas high schools. He was principal of Wetmore before moving to Topeka.

Mr. Teel served in the U.S. Army from January 8, 1942 to August 1, 1945. He was in the European Theater of Operations and was in seven major campaigns including North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Germany. He received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the ETO Medal.

He was a member of Gage Park Baptist Church, a member and past president of the Topeka Area Retired Teachers Association, the American Legion and held membership in a number of professional educational organizations.

In 1980, he was designated by Delta Pi Epsilon, business education fraternity, as the 1980 Kansas Business Education Teacher of the Year.

He was married on August 4, 1946 to Margery Eleanor Evans of Shubert, Nebraska. She preceded him in death on May 4, 2004. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy W. Peavler in 1995. Survivors include one brother, Harry L. Teel of Tulsa, OK; several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great nephews.

Committal services for the family and friends will take place at 10:00 a.m. Thursday in the Mount Hope Mausoleum Chapel where Military Honors will be conducted by a burial detail from Fort Riley. Entombment will follow. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Gage Park Baptist Church. Jesse will lie in state after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
