Obituary Notice
Jeannie Lavonne Caylor Durst was born on Father's Day, June 16, 1948, in Ottawa, Kansas to Martha Joan Baugher and Vernon Dean Caylor. Her teenage parents borrowed $15.00 to elope. A recently surfaced photograph shows Joan looking the part of a small town high school cheerleader and Vern looking the part of a dashing rebel (like Mark from the Roseanne sitcom). Jeannie adored her Grandma, Adella Welborn Baugher, who helped Jeannie's parents raise her in Ottawa, Kansas.
For over 20 years, Jeannie worked with her husband, Dr. Robert D. Durst, Jr., M.D., at Dermatology, P.A., in Topeka, Kansas. Jeannie considered his patients and employees her extended family, and she was grateful for their support during her illness.
Jeannie loved traveling with her husband and family on cruises and car trips. She enjoyed hunting down old family photographs and tracing genealogy with her cousins Gene and Karen Caylor. She liked crafts and loved to spoil her grandchildren.
In September 2005, Jeannie was informed she had only a short time to live. Jeannie faced her death with humor and dignity. She got her affairs in order, including writing this obituary and coordinating all the details of her funeral. On January 12, 2006, Jeannie died of heart disease at the age of 57.
Jeannie is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert D. Durst, Jr., M.D., her son, Larry Durst and his wife, Cherie Durst, of Topeka, Kansas, her daughter, Shawna Martin, of Auburn, Kansas, four grandchildren, Shaun Martin, Kaitlyn Martin, Erich Durst and Jason Durst, her brother, Ron Caylor and his wife, Gina Caylor, of Georgetown, Texas, and her nephew, Craig Caylor, of New Castle, Pennsylvania.
A visitation will be held at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Street, Topeka, Kansas, on Sunday, January 15, 2006 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka, Kansas, on Monday, January 16, 2006 at 10 a.m. To leave a special message for the family please visit www.PenwellGabel.com.
Instead of a traditional funeral service, Jeannie requested that her family and friends attend a "wake" around her birthday to celebrate her life. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Midland Hospice Care.
