Jean Mills, 72, of Topeka, passed away unexpectedly at her home on early Saturday morning, December 10, 2011. She was born on January 6, 1939 in Madison, Wisconsin, the daughter of Professor C. Harvey Sorum and Emma Lou (Bachelder) Sorum.
Jean attended the University of Wisconsin and became a member of the Pi Beta Phi social sorority and the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. In 1959, Jean married Phil Mills and in 1960, Jean graduated from the University of Kansas. She returned to the university a few years later to receive her Masters in Business (accounting). Jean was active in competitive tennis circles wherever she lived, winning more often than not from age 10 to 60. When multiple sclerosis took its toll, she became an avid bridge player. She was always a fan of the University of Kansas sports, men or women's. Jean's efforts were directed primarily to others as a wife, friend, mother and grandmother.
Jean is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Phil E. Mills, Jr.; their three children, Allison Thornbrugh of Castle Rock, CO, David Mills of Huntington, WV, and Alan Mills of Racine, WI; her seven grandchildren; and her brother, Dr. Paul Sorum of Schenectady, NY.
A memorial ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 14, at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, where the family will receive guests one hour prior to the service. Private family inurnment will take place at the Walnut Hill Cemetery.
