Jean K. Cohen, 75, passed away on January 1, 2004. Jean was born September 11, 1928 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Ralph R. Kirchner and Ruth Sidebottom Kirchner of Bristow, Oklahoma. She grew up in Bristow, attended Oklahoma State University and graduated from Washburn University. Jean was a certified public accountant and a fiber artist. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She was past president of The Mulvane Art Board, a founder of the Kansas Wildflower Society, a member of the Shawnee County Medical Auxiliary, the Board of Directors of The United Way of Greater Topeka, The Topeka Hand Weavers, and the Topeka Knitters. She was honored two times as the Topeka Woman of the Year. She was also the first woman to be elected to the Kansas Board of Accountancy.
She is survived by her stepmother, Maree Kirchner, Bristow, Oklahoma; her husband, Louis Cohen, M.D., Topeka; two stepsons: Bill Cohen, Levelland, Texas and Rob Cohen, Estes Park, Colorado; a niece, Sarah Thomas Wood, Arlington, Texas; three step grandsons, and two cousins.
Jean will lie in state on Sunday from Noon until 9 pm, at the funeral home.
Services will be at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th St., Topeka, KS 66604 at 3:00 PM on Monday, January 5, 2004. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
