Jansje Martha Fontijn Pruyser, 95, died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at her home in Brewster Place, Topeka.

Jansje was born October 14, 1912 to Henrikus and Martha Fontijn in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. As a young woman she was active in school and youth organizations. She loved music, singing, and camping. As a young adult she worked for the Dutch Social Democrat Labor Party. Jansje was attending University when World War II began. After the war, those whom she helped honored her by having Israel designate her a Righteous Gentile.

During the War years she met a fellow student, Paul W. Pruyser, whom she married on April 17, 1946. They later immigrated to the United States and lived in the Boston area. In 1954, they moved to Topekd with their three young children and where her husband pursued his career at the Menniger Foundation.

Shortly after moving to Topeka, Jansje began to pursue her interest in handweaving. She developed a passion for weaving and spinning that lasted many decades. She earned a Bachelor's degree in fine arts from Washburn University. As she gained knowledge and expertise in fiber arts, she generously shared her time and talents with others and mentored many beginning hand weavers. She was a long time member of the Topeka Handweaver's Guild.

Jansje was a member of many organizations in her lifetime and supported the fine arts, social and politcial causes, environmental issues, the Presbyterian Church in Topeka, and the Menninger School of Psychiarty.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Paul W. Pruyser, two sisters, on brother, and her parents. She is survived by her three children and their families: Henriette Area (Bob) of Mayetta; Herman Pruyser (Jamie) if Center, Colorado; and Pauline Pruyser of Topeka; and by her sister, Martha Fontijn Pruyser of Amsterdam. In addition, there are many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

At the request of Mrs. Pruyser, there will be cremation followed by private memorial services. In celebration of her life, memorial gifts may be made to Brewster Place Foundation sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel at 1321 SW 10th, Topeka, 66604. The family wishes to express special appreciation to the staff at Brewster Place (Meadow Lark) for their excellent and loving care of our mother.
